Tramping and fly fishing

Post by reinchamp » Fri Apr 05, 2019 2:58 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning an trip to the South Island in January 2020. I plan on fishing the higher elevation streams, doing a lot of tramping/fishing. As a foreign national with no prior NZ experience, I have some questions.
1/ Do I need to rent a 4X4 to take me places, or is it possible to get dropped off at a campground and hike/fish "good" water, spring creeks, from there?
2/ With a focus on spring creeks, and tramping, is there huts to overnight stay at most places, or should I plan on taking myself to a campground at the end of every day?
3/ What about the idea of tramping/fishing/living in the high country for 4-5 days at a time?
4/ Are heavy rain storm a concern in January?
5/ How do I obtain the name of property owners in order to ask for fishing access?
6/ January can be a warm time of the year. Should I carry waders? They tend to get heavy during a day of tramping.

Other advise?

Very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
