Blow flies

Post by Jaapie » Mon Dec 17, 2018 12:21 pm

Hey guys,

Hoping to plug into the old brains trust here -

What material are you guys using for the bodies of the blue blow flies?
I tied up a few patterns using some saltwater flashabou, and scared the crap out of a few trout when I offered them up.
I think the last trout is still in trauma counseling!

Somehow I think the body might be too blue.
I looked at the Manic blowfly patterns and the material is almost translucent blue.

Any ideas?
Appreciate the help or the steer in the right direction.

PS The green ones I have tied up work beautifully both as parachute and normal winged dries.

Either of these...

Veevus i03 iridescent blue
Axxel Royal Blue

The pics make them look more blue than what they really are..

Hi Johnno
I have used blue metallic string from Spotlight in the past.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Will try get some of that Veevus thread sent over - nice range of colours and I can see a few uses for sure.
Might pop into Spotlight too as they have some pretty good metallic thread now that I have had a good look online.

Thanks again.

Steve (Fly Shop) used to stock some diamond micro braid in blue that I found absolutely perfect for the body, however that's not to say the other suggestions aren't also ideal.

This is my favourite blowie from 2016 on this forum. I absolutely love humpys especially with a yellow body, which rainbows love in both lakes and rivers. The use of foam strips instead of deer hair is a big upgrade and makes tying so much easier imho. Another adaption that I used to use was a large Coch y Bondhu with a rib of metallic blue tinsel. I like the humpy better because it's a great floater. I might tie up some for the Tongariro in December. Another contender is the Adams with a metallic tinsel rib, the Adams being a very good searching fly for unfamiliar waters. Tight lines and Merry Christmas.

From the party shop, enough metallic blue tinsel to tie 3000+ blowflies. I had better get cracking.

I did a search through spotlight a while back and picked up some pretty cool metallic type thread.

It really does look pretty good, so will have to sit down and do some tying.
Got some black and light metallic blue colur.

@Southshore - thanks mate, have looked at that stuff before and used it, but it seems to be quite brittle from my experience.
The colour has been a bit 'Mardi Gras' and I've had refusals with it.

Cheers for the info though - will post up once I've tied up a few.

I cut the tinsel thin and wind it through a plumpish P.Herl body (not too tightly). A few dabs of glue on the underside of the tinsel keeps it in place long enough to hook a couple if they're in the mood. Funny thing is once the rib has gone they like the fly anyway ! can't win

These are a few of the blowflies that I have tied up.
Used some shiny tinsel stuff from Spotlight that has worked well.

Pretty chuffed with them and the way they have turned out.
Also tied up a few parachute patterns for a sneakier presentation and better imprint on the water.

Thanks for the help in this thread guys.
