Rotator Cuff Injury.... you had it?

Post by Johnno » Sun Nov 10, 2019 6:46 pm

I suffered one whilst walking the GR20 in Corsica. Fell on the track, wrenched my arm to prevent a 100 metre fall which was good. Bad thing is 6 weeks later I’ve still got major pain. I think i have torn the tendons. I’ve tried to do the man thing and ignore it but it ain’t working. I can wake up a red hot needle driving into my shoulder.... also have this weird click thing going on every now and again..

I can’t cast so haven’t fished this season... but weirdly I can paint, so the house is benefitting....

So, anyone else suffers this wee pain in the ass ( shoulder) and after an op - which I think I’ll need - how long did it take till you fished again?

Hi JOHNNO - I HAVE LOTS OF KNOWLEDGE ON THIS . THESE INJURIES ARE LIKE THE COMMON COLD IN THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE AND EVERYONE REACTS DIFFERENTLY TO THE DISABLING AFFECTS .
THAT SAID ITS BEST YOU REFER TO BOTH DR GOOGLE (there's heaps) AND YOUR GP.
BRIEF HISTORY :
I'M Ⓡ HANDED . I HAVE DONE A HEAP OF HEAVY WORK IN MY LIFE . 16yrs AGO MY Ⓛ SHOULDER PACKED IN COMPLETELY . JUST BEFORE MY OPP THE SURGEON SAID "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT ME TO DO THIS ? " I SAID OF COURSE ! HE SAID "YOU MAY FEEL DIFFERENTLY LATER." HE WAS RIGHT VERY PAINFUL BUT IT DID HEAL AND BY 3 MONTHS WAS USABLE . KEY HOLE SURGERY
6yrs AGO MY Ⓡ ONE GAVE OUT COMPLETELY AND ANOTHER SURGEON (Swiss & much older) REPAIRED THAT - OPEN SURGERY! IT WAS MUCH LESS PAINFUL HEALED QUICKER AND I LEARNT FLY FISHING ON IT VERY QUICKLY.
HE DID A BRILLIANT JOB - SHOULDER LIKE NEW !

THEN ON 14th of FEB '16 I WAS STALKING A RISING TROUT. WALKING DOWN A STEEPISH WET TUSSOCK BANK (talking to myself and the trout - not concentrating ) BANG! BOTH FEET WENT FROM UNDER ME - MY FULL WEIGHT(15stn) CAME DOWN ON MY Ⓡ ELBOW - I SLID DOWN THE BANK - MY FEET LANDING IN THE WATER AN ME SITTING UPRIGHT IN ABSOLUTE AGONY . THE FALL HAD PILE DRIVEN MY ARM BONE INTO MY SHOULDER - UP INTO THAT BEAUTIFULLY REBUILT SHOULDER .MY CASTING ARM!
MEANWHILE THE TROUT KEPT ON FEEDING . 8-)

MY DR SENT ME TO ANOTHER SHOULDER SPECIALIST (one who does a lot of acc work - my dr was scared acc would call it a previous injury). 6 MONTHS LATER HE KEYHOLE REPAIRED IT (sort of ) . TWO DAYS LATER I STARTED DOING FAKE CASTS WHILE WALKING ROUND . ELBOW TUCKED IN TO TORSO AND JUST DOING ELBOW CASTS .
IT TOOK MONTHS TO HEAL (as much as it ever will - took over 2yrs to get anything like comfortable and at least daily I curse both the surgeon and the shoulder gods but I can fish - elbow casting !)
NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS ! FISHING IS FINE - CATCHING IS BETTER - RETRIEVING CAN BE HELL . ANY FEISTY FISH OVER 3lb CAN CAUSE PAIN .
YOU MAY NOT BE SO BAD - NEITHER OF MY 2 TOP TENDONS ARE ATTACHED NOW BUT MY ELBOW ONE IS .

THE CLICKING YOUR FEELING IS NOT GOOD AND NIGHT PAIN CAN GET VERY AGGRESSIVE :x .

(to make it worse for me the Ⓛ is now worn out again and I'm on the list for another repair - Nº4)

GET HELP & GOOD LUCK !!

Tore a muscle/tendon in my right shoulder two months ago. Not sure just which as I never got an ultra-sound. Long periods of ice packs - as long as you can sit still, to take down inflammation. I used ice at night in bed. Was the only way I could sleep.
Also, physiotherapy is super important. Mine may not have been too bad as I was only six weeks without casting. But range of motion is still restricted. And I have to use my other hand to move my right arm when I’m laying in bed.
I would say you definitely need to see dr and physio folks. So many different things can go wrong with the shoulder join.
Hope you get better soon.

Had mine done. 3 weeks in a sling and 5 months off work. (builder). Learned to cast left handed, mostly just roll casting, then running up the bank to beach the fish.(carefully chosen spots). I could use fingers to help with knots. The hardest part was putting my rod together and threading up. My wife netted the first fish for me. ACC paid. You can't raise yor arm above the shoulder for much of that time. Hip replacements take far less time I believe.
