upper wairau flow

Post by robert » Tue Oct 22, 2019 11:36 am

Hi: From Canada. Will be visiting NZ S.I. in December. Just wondering about what is a manageable flow rate for sight fishing/prospecting on the upper Wairau, Malborough region, with dries; dries & dropper? I've been looking at gov't flow chart but it is (data) meaningless with no history on river except 1X in late February.
Any questions on trout fishing SW Alberta/ Canadian Rockies are welcomed...

From experience at 50 cumec's its boisterous, and in the 30's is better. Its much the same size as the Hurunui and Waiau here in North Canterbury.

Search the forum as there used to be a link to an article with the exact criteria for South Island rivers, but that was going back a few years.

Thanks Andy on cumec's examples....gives me a guideline. I will search the forum for the link you mentioned. Again, thanks for responding.
