Fly Rod weight and a bit of a novice

Post by larrakin » Sun Jul 14, 2019 5:09 pm

I recently decided to buy myself a trout rod set up from hunting and fishing,
I had the intention but really no clue of buying a 6 to 7 weight but got a bit bamboozled and ended up an 8 weight rod set up
The set up is cost around $500 and is a fine looking Blade 9 ft 8 weight setup.
Most of my fishing would be the lower Rangitikei River which is a reasonable size river and the odd visit to the Tauranga Taupo and Tongariro rivers,
Looking at a few youtube videos I might have mistakenly gone a bit big,
Any Ideas or will I still be ok with this rod

Plenty of people using 7-8# on the Tongariro. Sure that's a pretty heavy / powerful rod for what you want but it will still catch fish hey?

I would have recommended a 5-6# but most likely a 6# for those bigger rivers, but hey this leaves you the option to get one of those later on down the track as well as you already have a great setup for light saltwater stuff.

That will help me sleep at night,
An great for some saltwater stuff plus the option of buying a lighter rod down the track

That's a very slippery slope that you are heading down, especially if there is a significant other person in your life. Good luck stopping at 2 rods. :D

THE OTHER ADVANTAGE OF A GOOD #8wt ROD IS USING IT INTO A STRONG GUSTY WIND . SOME HOT SUMMER DAYS ON MY FAVOURITE PUDDLE WE GET POWERFULLY STRONG NE GALES. THERES A COUPLE OF HOLES I LIKE WHERE YOU HAVE NO OPTION BUT TO FISH INTO IT . THATS WHEN AN #8wt WITH A GOOD #8WF LINE COME INTO THEIR OWN .GOT SOME NICE FISH THAT WAY . ;)

Nice work Johnno. Your definitely in the club hey?

The only downside is choosing which rod to use each time you go out. IV got a brand new Orvis that hasn't seen a river yet, I keep forgetting. I promise to take it out this weekend!
