A Fly Rod For Next Years Trip 2018

Post by just4grins » Sat Nov 04, 2017 4:12 am

Having never fished in NZ before, my wife and I are planning a trip for next year. As an aside I was only in NZ once, in 1978, for three days, and coming back to see an old friend, and conclude the fishing trip of our dreams. Many questions, but here is one. My favorite rod is a Winston Biiix 10' 4wt with a lot of backbone. Originally purchased as a nymph rod I've moved into using it as a great dry fly rod as well. My longest cast has been the entire line on the Big Horn River in Montana casting tricos, my largest fish was on our Frying Pan River, a 29" cutthroat. So, here's the question would this rod work on your waters? If not, I'd leave it home and use tackle supplied by a lodge, not yet chosen. I've been fly fishing for almost 40 years, really excited about this trip, and would love to have some input.

Yup, it'll be fine. I'm hunting for a 9 foot 4wgt B3X. Winston are hen's teeth here. Love 'em!

Yip as Johnno said it will work on our waters, but so will any rod HEHEH

Yep be a good rod, but if that's the only rod your intending on using then you will be under-gunned when the wind picks up or your on a big back country river chasing our larger fish. I typically us a 9' 5# for most stuff and a 9' 6# for big back country river stuff, just to give you an idea.

IF your only going to fish out of a lodge then they will supply suitable tackle.

Thanks for the suggestions. Naturally excited and somewhat overwhelmed by the planning. Can't wait!
