The jokes on me!

Post by Maniototoflyfisher » Wed Mar 20, 2019 5:14 pm

As I get older I can't believe some of the bumbling things I do these days. Not just tripping over or losing things - but real stupid things.
During cicada season I was fishing out of my kayak on my local tussock dam - I'd released a few trout without bother then I became engrossed with a fish that had swallowed the fly - needing two hands. My rod was balanced across the kayak like always but after releasing the trout I reached for my rod - oh dear, not there! It had obviously fallen off the kayak and I had completely missed the event! The wind had blown me closer to the shore so I paddled up wind, hoping that a little bit of the flyline would be floating but really thinking what am I going to tell my Insurance agent. After a while and I couldn't really believe it, there was the top foot of my rod sticking above the surface - the reel was resting on a weed bed with enough fronds coming to the surface to support it vertically - whew!
And then today I was fishing with a mate at the river - we had gone in different directions and were meeting back at the start to have lunch - I arrived only moments earlier and sat on the river bank so my legs were over the bank - had eaten lunch then realised I'd put my hand in some fresh cow shit. Looked around for the source and realised I was sitting slap bang in the middle of the pat! My only thought is that I was looking at my partner arriving and didn't look down as I sat down - had to take off my boots to get my shorts off then wash them in the river

   I can imagine I could losing the rod like that, but sitting in a cow pat, I've sat on too many thistle and matagari to not have a good look first - but then I'm getting older too and have noticed these sorts of little mishaps that didn't used to occur to... :)

TIDDLER - never got to your puddle. Don't lose any sleep over me catching all your fish - have to work hard to get one or two with my ability! Decided some cow crap from my shorts wasn't going to affect the river any more than the mob of heifers present with access to the banks and backwaters - and certainly couldn't sit on the ute seat without severe consequences when I got home. Met a couple of flyfishers on the river that fished your puddle yesterday - only saw one trout that rose to a dry but was 4.5lb.
