Low River Flows...

Post by piwakawaka » Sun Mar 01, 2015 6:41 pm

hi....

Interesting article on River Flow Levels and temperature effect on trout and salmon fishing. I imagine I am like a lot of anglers and have noticed a marked change in fish behaviour over the last few weeks as the "drought" kicks in. The Wairau is struggling at the moment with its deepest pools and runs barely at waist depth and gin clear. Off on a scouting mission in the morning to the upper regions for a look.

Fished the Rangitikei River yesterday and noticed the usually summer fishing pattern for this time of year when the flows are very low and water temp between 17 & 20 degrees. Once 2pm arrives and the water temp is nearing its daily peak of 20 degrees, fishing gets tough and the fish lie doggo in the deeper pools. The secret is to get on the go early in the day and kick back and enjoy the heat of the day in the shade of a tree - or join the fish for a swim ;)

Some of my life I spend fly fishing, the rest I just waste!

I won't fish when the water temps are up there... Stresses the trout you do catch too much.
