Cars are acceptable, but cyclist aren't?

No it doesn't. Go and actually visit the valley fraser and read the proposal before you comment. You obviously don't understand which part of the river we are discussing
Know all about the proposal. Yes iv read the entire thing, as well as all the appendices and visited / fished the location of the proposal (above Oreti Rd to North to where the Mt Nicolas Rd crosses the Oreti again. The Lincoln Hut section) that you obviously feel so strongly about. Sorry but i just aint with you on this one mate.
I'm sorry you don't feel the same as us Fraser, perhaps its something to do with the fact you come from such a commercialised town already.

Sadly if it gets the go ahead maybe then you'll realise what an impact this will have and how it just isn't needed in the area. Mountain bikers can already access the place, there's just no need for 80,000 of them, let alone the toilets, 216 metre long bridges, culverts and(If Landcorp are to be believed after reading their submission against the Mararoa option) the rubbish and excrement that comes with cycle trails.

This is the only undeveloped stretch of the Oreti apart from a few kms upstream of the top bridge, once its developed thats it, there's no going back. Would you feel the same apathy towards a gondola up the Greenstone?

Fraser
If you know where they are putting the track, then you should how sensitive it is to development, if you don't then
it shows how naïve you are being.
First off is a bike trail, then who knows what next, maybe a road all the way up to join Mt Nicolas rd, then Fish and Game can put Angler Access all along the river.
We need more exclusive areas to fish, otherwise once it's gone, there's no way of bringing them back.

The next thing that will be asked for is some form of accommodation close to the Mt Nicholas road bridge. There is already a proposal floating around for an 80 room hotel in this area. Just what we need in the area.

The way you guys are describing it, it does sound pretty bad and perhaps you should fight it. You seem to be entering a phase of pollution and exploitation that started here 200 years ago and that we are still struggling to fight and put right. Marine salmon farming has killed our west coast sea run trout and Atlantic salmon fishery, once up there with the best in the world. There is more profit and more jobs in cheap farmed salmon.

A few years ago I was fishing a spring creek quite near Hari Hari, but on the north side of The Wanganui River. A drain from a small dairy farm was spewing filth into the pristine creek. After milking the cows headed back to the pasture crossing a small bridge over the creek. There was a continuous precession of cows going over the bridge for at least ½ hour shitting as they walked. There were many hundreds and this was just a tiny farm. I have never seen anything like it. You guys have much bigger things to worry about than bicycle tracks.

From that perspective it looks like NZ is no different from anywhere else. The love of money comes first although looking in from the outside this looks like the one of your smaller issues

The way I look at it Mike its like a few of the older members in the local fishing club said how they were the ones throwing themselves in front of the bulldozers that started to push the track in from Kinloch to the Greenstone Mouth many years ago. Now they say they feel quite embarrassed about been apposed to it back then, and now feel that the road is the best thing ever!
Mike H wrote:Mountain bikers can already access the place
Im pretty sure that's not correct Mike! Maybe check your facts on that one hey?

You say that, but other than the bridge (which I have to say is the only component of the application that I do have an issue with) the proposal is for a cycle trail to be built up through there, which is of a similar impact to the existing farmers access roads and walk track that already run through the area.

Mike H wrote:Would you feel the same apathy towards a gondola up the Greenstone?
Its not apathy Mike, Iv read the application and don't feel that this is going to be the decimation of that section of the river as you obviously think it will be.

As for the Greenstone, hell yea id be strongly objecting to that one!!! That's a totally different scenario though. The only access to that valley from head to tail is by foot (or noobs in choppers  ) Most of the Oreti valley is already farm land, or has a flipping great road running right along side it.

I say pick your battles, and trust me this isn't it. The impact of water extraction, and effluent disposal into our rivers is the war we need to win! ;)

Much of this river is already near to roads and easily accessible, so why not preserve the small bit that isn’t?

This section of river is popular and we know exactly why it’s popular. It is the lack of formed tracks (gravel extraction and earthworks included), lack of 200 m long bridges across the river and most of all the lack of 80,000 extra people. The diversity of experience is important. It is a little bit of backcountry isolation that doesn’t need a helicopter or a day’s tramp in to access. That is a valuable resource and worth preserving.

You say this is about picking your battles. Extraction and effluent discharge issues are actually fairly easy to address. You can look back and say, we got that wrong, reduce allocations or tighten standards and improve the outcome. This cycle trail is forever. Once it is built there will be no going back to regain what was lost.

To me this isn't anti-cycling. A cycle trail can be run down the Mararoa River meeting the needs of both camps.

Fraser your comments really don't sound like they come from someone with any real idea of the area bro.

Regarding mountain bikes using the area now Fraser if you spent some time down the valley you'd see them using the old 4wd track. You'd also see pig hunters on 4 wheelers and the occasional hunter who gets the key to the gate from DOC. Various users utilise the area now because of the beauty and solitude it offers without difficult access. To wreck this by chucking 80,000 tourists down it is madness.

I have to ask, are you an acquaintance of Mike Barnett? He's the businessman pushing this project which starts and finishes in Queenstown. The one that when one of our Councillor's asked him about the proposed 80 bed lodge at the head of the valley didn't deny being involved with this. You probably approve of this as well if you read the business case and realise the need for it in the area. You sound very much like him.

Guys, can I ask who came up with the figure of 80,000 tourists and how they arrived at it?
