Oreti River Cycle trail proposed again!

Post by Mike H » Sat Oct 04, 2014 4:44 pm

While we successfully challenged the construction of part of the 'Around the Mountain Cycle Trail' a while back the Southland District Council have lodged another application for this. While they have now considered the Mararoa River option their preference is again to go down the pristine Upper Oreti valley. The details can be seen here:

http://southlanddc.govt.nz/my-southland ... stage-two/

If you know the area well you'll be horrified I'm sure at the proposed bridge at the narrows near the top of the Patterson Bush beat. The bias shown in some of the expert reports saddens me as does the whole proposal. The economic assessment is overly optimistic in regard to cycle user projections and too pessimistic with regard to the economic benefits of the area as a current tourism destination without the trail.

Its not uncommon when proposals go up for a second time for resistance to drop off as people put in such a large effort in the first time and I fear this will be the case here. Please if you have time make a submission. Be sure to include the affects on amenity to those who use this valley as this was a determining factor for the commissioner last time. Its not just fisherman affected here either. Its hunters, mountain bikers, trampers and the like who currently happily use this wild valley as it is now, free from commercial exploitation.

Submissions have to be in by 3 November 2014.

And I'm sure its just coincidence that the consultation period is over the first month of the new fishing season, especially considering opposition was 90% from fishermen last time around.

This again is rediculous and needs strong opposal. There is a very viable, and much safer option for the mon and pop cyclist down the Mararoa valley offering just as much scenery and experience, where the development of a cycle track will cause much less damage to the natural landscape than a trail down the stunningly beautiful Oreti.

Emailed submissions and sent to

Emailsdc@southlanddc.govt.nz

Council can accept email submissions and we are open to you being creative with the prescribed form.

What most people do is type up their submission in a word document (such as Microsoft Word) following the general format of the prescribed RMA submission form (Form 13). This will enable you to be expansive as you like in your submission.

The format of the form is outlined in the RMA and should be followed where possible.

I trust this helps.

Bump. Let's hear how international anglers feel about an accessible trophy trout fishery, with a real sense of remoteness facing development detracting from the naturalness and intactness of it's existing scenic environment.

I've emailed a response this morning to the link you provided.

It's the first time I've ever directly responded to an issue like this before in another country, working within the conservation sector I've always avoided it as it's slightly frustrating feeling you don't have the local knowledge to really provide a highly detailed response.

But I guess it cant do any harm raising the international view.
