I visit family from the UK over the winter months & fish both with a guide & independently...maybe 5 days with a guide, 5-7 on my own.

Overall I think the local kiwi angler is justified in being annoyed at times, particularly at weekends & holiday times.

The current visitors licence fee is much too low & a laughingly small percentage of the cost of a whole trip.

In Slovenia it is 50-90 euros per day, in Iceland 50-300 euros per day. In the UK daily rates for river fishing are from £10 to £75 per day. Charge more & use the cash to fight for water quality & genuinely monitor angler activity.

Fine people and, more importantly exclude them from NZ, if they abuse your rivers.

Introduce a beat system on some rivers with weekend & NZ holiday access prioritised for local Anglers.

Licence the guides.....some are excellent some less so unfortunately

Commercialising fishing access is not an answer in this so far unspoilt country. I think the last thing the Kiwis would want is a ridiculous "beat system" as in the UK.

Yeah - nah!

Introduction of the beat system, would meaning scrapping one of the key principals for NZ F&G - access to fishing and hunting no matter what ones stature in society is. In fact - its one reason why this country exists. Our English forefathers left the UK to get away from the class society, and everything it stood for.

Yep, I do support a slightly higher fee for non residents but nothing dramatic, probably close to what it is now;. Access for all not creating a fishery for the wealthy. There are already numerous places I will never be able to fish due to the cost; Europe etc. I would hate to see NZ become that. Most of the lodges and guides are out of my price range already so I wouldn't be keen to see them get better(controlled) access to the rivers.
