Clothing for Mid Summer North Island

Post by wcb » Sat Oct 19, 2019 11:28 pm

Coming over on the 20th Dec to 14th Jan fishing the North Island with a friend.
Will mainly be fishing the Eastern and Hawke's Bay areas or thats the plan so far.
When it comes to clothing i am thinking that Wet wading might be the way forward.
Is it worth bringing waders as well?
What gear do you guys like to use clothing wise.
I have some Bestard Canyoning boots on there way to me and was thinking of Under Armour leggins and shorts.
Am i right that the weather can change a lot even in summer so i good waterproof coat is needed as well.
Thoughts please.

Hi Toby - doesn't look like any North Islanders are going to reply to your questions. From my limited experience of trout fishing in the Eastern and Hawkes Bay I think you are on the right track with wet wading in Dec/Jan. Unless you are planning to fish lakes standing in waist deep water I'd leave the waders at home. A raincoat could be useful.

You can expect to wet wade most of the time, but you are there for a decent stretch and could strike some bad weather at some point during your stay. You might be thankful to have some protection from the elements. A good waterproof jacket is essential but I would also take breathable waders. No point being cold.

I second Maniotoboflyfisher.
I used to wet wade exclusively when in NZ untill one day I fished Lake Brunner in the rain. Left me cold to the bone and shaking...
Wet wading is fine and really comfortable when you spend most of the time walking the bank. But standing in a lake or fishing a river full of selective risers, waders are a great advantage.
I think the advise is good for both islands.
