Tauranga Taupo questions

Hi
I'm thinking about doing a winter trip across the ditch in July. I've fished the South Island plenty of times through Nov - April but this would be my first trip north with the winter woolies packed.
I'd love some tips about places to stay if I was fishing the Tauranga Taupo area. Do you reckon Turangi is okay or is Taupo a better option?
Do you think it's worth packing a switch rod for the TT or only for the Tongariro?
And finally, any guide recommendations for a couple of days?

Kym I like Turangi, small and well set up for fishermen, but haven't been up there fishing for sometime now, hopefully you'll get some local input - but sounds a good plan!

Thanks Steve. I haven't been there before but I've heard good things. I'm planning to tie up some winter patterns with the stuff I ordered from you the other week. Any info I can get will be great.

Go with Turangi - its a much quicker and easier drive back from the TT. Also gives you options if you want to go around to Kuratau or even just unwind with a swim in the hot pools at Tokaanu.

Turangi is the place to stay and bring the switch....great for nymphing on the TT. Mind you, I use 5wt there and an 8 wt like a lot of folks have is overkill.

As the guys have said Turangi would definitely be your best bet. I fish there at least once a month all through the year. Feel free to flick me a PM if you have a few questions.

You'll love Turangi Kym. You can walk into the bakery with your waders on and nobody will look twice. It's a real fishy town. And the Tongariro is perfect for swinging. The TT is more of a nymphing stream - it isn't very big.
