Fish and Game magazine
I presume everyone who subscribed to the Fish and Game NZ magazine will have recently received their last copy ( apart from the "free" ones at the start of the fishing and gamebird seasons) - but no one on here has made a mention?
It was one of the few I subscribe to that I looked forward to arriving. I understand the reasons why it wasn't paying its way but no other magazine was as " hard hitting " on the causes of the environmental vandalism of our waterways - that's a loss.
I personally would have payed more for my subscription if that would have helped - a survey of the subscribers with some options of how to make it profitable again would have been a nicer touch rather than being presented with a dead turkey!

I’ve kept every one of the 101 issues and am gong to miss the content and writers. It really is/was a quality product. Will other publications carry the same quantity and breadth of environmental issues? Sometimes I found them a hard read as they dealt with difficult issues but I always perservered as it is so important.
I do hope the writers find another publication (print, not digital) that we can support.
The work of Rachel Stewart, Brian Turner, Dave Witherow, Derek Grzwlewski, Peter Carty, Bob South, Peter Ryan and others too numerous to mention - I’ve benefited hugely from their efforts.
Tend to agree with Maniototoflyfisher that a few extra dollars oer issue could have given the magazine a chance. Deserved a trial in my opinion.
Maybe I’ll have to reread all 101. Will that take me another 25 years?

Re: Fish and Game magazine
Print is a tough medium, it's very sad to see it go after personally having been involved in it for so long. It didn't appeal to everyone however, and I got my fair share of "letters to the editor"! But for me, the photography was what it was about. I would have liked to see a more practical stance on articles, like I tried to portray, and less political, but it certainly opened up a can of worms to environmental issues which is a good thing and the country and anglers needed this awareness. I just think it lost a lot of junior anglers in it's latter years. The special editions will live on twice yearly and I don't think it's the last you'll see of the magazine in some form or another... who knows... I have a feeling... Andrew

It's a shame for sure, particularly on the advocacy side, don't know how that message will be disseminated going forward, as it still needs to be done I believe, and I agree that people would likely pay more for the subscription if asked, still a shame that a popular piece of NZ fisheries culture is being lost...

The internet is the new written media medium of choice sadly. The brave new world.....
As a result books and magazines suffer, particularly in a niche market like fly fishing.
I’m old school and far prefer to sit down with a cuppa and pour over a good book or magazine than an online blog or whatever. But alas I’m in the minority
So the likes of the F and G mag will potentially go the way of the Moa....
Happily the finest flyfishing mag in the world (Flytyer) is still going strong. I’ve got every copy of the new mag and a fair wack of the old. Always a great reference resource and always happy to see the new edition in the mail....

Not surprised to hear that the F&G mag is going the way of the Dodo. The cover price was too cheap for what you got. In saying that - I suspect that despite the stunning photography and in-depth articles, the politics got in the way of fishing for many readers. The funny thing about fishing magazines – people want to read about fishing, and not about the issues of water quality and overcrowding etc.
The thing too (in NZ anyway) that quality print media has a battle to break even. There are many magazines with a much smaller audience that are either struggling, have quit, or have had to make wholesale changes to the finished item to come in under a price point. Other specialist publications carry a much higher price tag – F&G Mag could have done so too.
Do agree that the tough issues need publicising – maybe F&G as an organisation need to take over that, and not rely on the likes of Hamish and Bob South to do that?
Johnno – had clean forgot about the Flytyer magazine – despite having liberated a very old copy from the magazine stack at our Clearwater hut. Thanks for the reminder

Re: Fish and Game magazine
Yea a real pity to see it go hey? Must say though that I got so sick of keeping huge piles of magazines and trying to give them away to people that I took the stance to only purchase online magazines a few years back. If only they had kept going with it, as an online format?
Bucking trends in fly fishing since 1970!
