FISHING CLUB SCALES ??

Post by TIDDLER » Mon Mar 26, 2018 2:09 pm

Hi GUYS - OUR CLUB HAS AN OLD PAIR OF SALTER SCALES THAT YOU USED TO SEE HANGING IN THE FRUIT OR FISH SHOPS .
LARGE DIA DIAL AND LARGE TRAY HANGING BELOW . THE DIAL IS VERY OLD - MARKED AND HARD TO READ . IN FAIRNESS IT STILL WEIGHS PRETTY ACCURATELY . IT WEIGHS IN LB AND OZs BY 1oz DIVISIONS .
QUESTION .... WHAT SCALES DOES YOUR CLUB USE AND APPROX THE CO$T ??

Got a feeling we purchased digital scales (salter or known top end brand) from a specialist provider, through one of the members with contacts to the food trade. All in kg's now - no where near as exciting.

They are going to be redundant shortly, as we are pushing for more catch and release fishing, using weights from weigh nets, calibrated if the competition requires it.

Yea we (Wakatipu Anglers Club) have been predominately C&R for at least the last 7 years. All our club comps are more of a social affair with honesty been the measure of fairness. If someone said the fish weighed ?? then its taken as been so. Nothing wrong with taking a fish, but thats up to people to choose for themselves.

THANKS GUYS - ROOM FOR THOUGHT THERE . ANDY , I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN RE kgs NOT BEING AS EXCITING AS Lbs / ozs . (maybe thats my age ) I CARRY A SMALL SET OF DIGITAL SCALES ON THE WATER , WHICH CAN BE SET TO DIFFERENT WEIGHT SETTINGS . I ALWAYS HAVE THEM SET ON Lbs .
UNFORTUNATELY THEY ARE DECIMALISED SO A 3 lb 4 oz TROUT READS AS 3.25 lb . THATS OK - MY SCHOOLBOY (50s - 60s) ARITHMETIC IS STILL SHARP ENOUGH TO CONVERT IT .

FRASER , THATS INTERESTING . ARE THE CUPS / SHIELDS etc STILL PRESENTED ? IF SO THAT MUST BE ON THE HONESTY REGIME.
IS THERE ANY BACKBITING AT A LATER STAGE ?

Yep we still present cups / shields. Actually iv got a stack iv got to get engraved now, as im the president.

Most people buy the Mcleans weight net so weights are submitted. Nope never been any issues between any members that I know of based on suggested weights. In fact we have had the opposite, with others saying "oh his weighed less but was a nicer fish" etc... WE are more interested in having a great time on the water and a few laughs over a drink or two afterwards. A hell of a nice bunch of guys and girls. They make me proud to be their president!! :D

Southland Fly Fishing Club uses the same arrangement as Fraser's Wakatipu Club uses. Members can weigh their fish themselves and then either release it or take it home. We don't want to see it and weigh it.

Good to hear Dave. I know that there has been competitions in the past where myself and others have caught fish but not entered them (kept it quiet) as we prefer the joy of seeing someone new to fly fishing / learning win a cup and been stoked to do so. After all fishing clubs are about promoting fishing, not degrading those who are less skilled.

Also we have a few guides who are members. They tend to never enter a fish, which is very good of them. They have an unfair advantage over others, since there on the rivers every day.

Our club is also an honour system, if there is another club member to witness it they will.
Heading towards more catch and release.

Also during competitions for the biggest fish, informing all boat anglers what is currently the biggest fished weighted, so a lot more fish will be released back. As each time a bigger one is caught, the voice goes out on the radio again letting all boats know.

Fish allowed to be submitted from all regions, for yearly competitions.
Unlike Southland Fly fishing club that only allows from Southland and Otago.

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

I was told a very funny story in a pub in Western Southland about one canal fish that won two commercial competitions in Southland a few years ago. Knowing the characters involved I have no reason to believe it was not true! :D
Cheers,
