Snail rise
Had an interesting trip down my local river yesterday with the wife and our kayaks. River was back in its banks after a small flood but still running into some backwaters. In the one big backwater we accessed and in the weir the river runs in to, we saw many (dozens) of trout rising. They were cruising in small circles (1 - 2 metres) and feeding every couple of seconds at the surface with their heads breaking the surface. We could get within a couple of metres of them and they kept feeding. It appeared they were feeding on the only thing I could see in the water ( and in a kayak you can observe well ) which was 3 - 4 mm sized snails floating in the film. There were hundreds ( probably thousands) of them - spread out about a foot apart - hence the rise every couple of seconds in a small circle. Had left the rod in the ute!!
