DRY SPELL - DRY WATERWAYS
RIVERS HAVE CERTAINLY DROPPED DUE TO THE BIG DRY - BUT ITS NOT ONLY THE RIVERS . THE LAKES I FISH ARE BADLY AFFECTED . THESE LAKES WERE BUILT FOR IRRIGATION SO ONE CAN NOT REALLY COMPLAIN WHEN THEY ARE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE . THERE ARE PARTS THAT USUALLY FISH WELL AT THIS TIME OF YEAR WHICH HAVE BECOME HUGE MUDFLATS . WHERE THERE IS WATER IT IS VERY WARM . FISH HAVE RETREATED TO THE MAIN LAKE FOR COMFORT AND DEPTH . BOATIES HAVING A BALL !

Hopefully, with the early emergence of the tussock cicadas the fish will be drawn back to the surface. On Tuesday there were thousands of cicadas on the water but it looked like the fish weren't keyed in to them yet - only the odd rising fish. Wednesday was raining/ overcast and with only the odd cicada around - but there were a few fish keen for a imitation.

Hi MANIOTOTOFLYFISHER - READING BETWEEN THE LINES YOU FISH A DIFFERENT PUDDLE TO ME - MAKES SENSE AS THE ONE I SUSPECT YOU FISH WILL BE A LOT CLOSER TO HOME FOR YOU . I WENT TO MY FAVOURITE PUDDLE YESTERDAY (30º) AND AS YOU SAY THE CICADAS ARE ABOUT . NOT IN THE THOUSANDS THERE - MORE LIKE THE DOZENS . THE USUAL SPLASHY RISES AND NOT TAKING THAT OCCURS WITH CICADA FISHING . LANDED FIVE BUT NOT ONE OF THEM OVER 1½lb . THE MUD FLATS ARE GROWING BIGGER BY THE DAY AND IT DOESNT BODE WELL FOR A GOOD SEASON . NEXT WEEK IS ALSO A SCORCHER AND I COULD SPIT MORE MOISTURE THAN THE FEW DROPS OF RAIN THAT BLESS US . EVEN FOLK WHO HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 60 T0 80yrs CAN'T RECALL A SUMMER LIKE THIS . THE ONES I CAUGHT WERE ON 3 DIFFERENT CICADA IMITATIONS SO THEY ARE NOT BEING FUSSY . HERE'S HOPING FOR IMPROVED CONDITIONS BUT THAT WOULD REQUIRE A WEEK OF DOWNPOURS WHICH IN THEMSELVES WOULD DO DAMAGE ! AH WELL - THATS FISHING !!

Re: DRY SPELL - DRY WATERWAYS
Yes it's dry, on Sunday I jumped in the truck and headed for a spring creek thinking the water would be reasonably cool still, first sign that that may not be the case happened when I got onto the gravel road and found it washed out in places, then the fords had been too, but were passable. Arriving at the creek and it was completely blown out... Thunder storms..., been a few rumblings in the evenings coming from the hills... Oh well, have to try again next weekend.

I think of spring creeks as being very stable waterways - level gradient, good bank vegetation - good aquatic weed beds - excess water "overflows" rather than tearing down the channel. However I suppose a thunderstorm stationary in one spot for a while can do a lot of damage - ask Roxburgh!

Yes that's what happened, so it's not the usual pattern, it'll settle down pretty quickly, in fact I heard someone had some pretty good success up that way yesterday -

Not at the moment Apparently the 3rd highest flow in the Taieri at Outram since they started recording 42 years ago. Looks like it's peaking at Waipiata at the moment- 233 cumecs - only 200 times the common summer flow - but we've got a new river - the ODT report this morning said the Waipiata river was still rising because the Loganburn dam was overflowing !! Must go for a walk and find that river!
How are your local rivers fairing?

Hi DAVE - YEP ! ITS BEEN A TRIFLE DAMP HERE AS WELL . THE CLUTHA - Mata-Au _ WHICH AVERAGES ABOUT 4OO SHOT UP TO 2700cumecs BUT IS NOW BACK TO 1600 .OTHER SMALLER RIVERS SIMILARLY AFFECTED . SOME BY 10/12 TIMES THEIR AVERAGES.
ITS NOT THE RIVERS THAT WORRY ME (easy for me to say - I'm on dryish land) BUT RATHER THE ROADS . THE HIGH COUNTRY TRACKS WILL BE A MESS AND THE COUNCILS WILL BE UNDER PRESSURE TO FIX THEM ALL AT ONCE . OF COURSE THAT WON'T HAPPEN . THE TROUT ARE SAFE FOR A WHILE AND EVEN THEY WILL NEED TO WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND FILTERING GEAR.
