In search of sun, trout, and serenity!...

A few pics from a roadie last week to find some sun, no wind and fish! Found all three in the wonderful Hawkes Bay! Just a few pics of what was some sensational fishing over 3 days, fished solo apart from being joined by Oddvar from Norway for this particular day.

Yes, they were very fat and fit Wilki, hard to hold onto for release!

Cheers mate, forgot this pic, fish of the day at just over 6lb from 200mm of water! Had Oddvar well into his backing.

I'm just back from a 2-week business trip that took me to New Zealand and Australia, and Sunday, February 6 I managed to get out on a river in Hawke's Bay with a local angler who kindly hooked me up with gear, expert advice and these pics.

I hooked (and broke off) a rainbow trout that would've gone 5+ pounds close to here. Fish were cruising around these quiet backwaters and we'd spot them, stalk them and try to get a small unweighted nymph in front of them. An exciting and completely new to me style of fly fishing.

Here's a shot of a 4-pounder that didn't get away.

We also fished some of the riffles more conventionally (i.e., more like what I'm used to back home), with a yarn indicator, large beadhead and small unweighted nymph, but the biggest fish seemed to be in the slowest/clearest water. Here's one from a riffle.

It was a great way to get away from work for a morning. Now I'm really looking forward to warmer weather in the northeastern U.S.

One final note: fish this size are unusual for my normal waters of the Catskills, so please no apologies about how small they are. As a relative novice fly-fisher, I'm happy to just catch fish.
