I think it would be useful to have more info regards etiquette with the licence.... although there is just as good an argument that the info is all out there and easy to google... I guess although hopefully only a small minority, you only need a few inconsiderate ar@eholes to give a bad impression...
Prepping to see what local traditions and etiquette is was an enjoyable part of pre-planning when I visited... Chris Dore has some great info to follow, I printed and laminated little signs whilst still in the U.K. to leave on my dashboard that said “headed up” or “downstream”.... perhaps that’s a bit anal, but I’d hate to feel I was p!ssing people off and ruining there fishing... whether local over NR...

That’s getting to be quite a common thing to do now which is good. One of the F and G regions has them at a popular back country car park for anglers to use..

It is interesting Boisker mentions Chris Dore. Attached is a photo of one of the signs that Chris leaves on his dash. The particular site in one that it is normal to walk down and fish back up or to fish up or to fish up. We were planning to fish up so we left our gone upstream sign on my dash and had a good day. Clearly Chris has a number of signs and just selects the appropriate sign.

I was surprised that it wasn’t as common as I expected when I came over Dave... I just assumed from reading Chris’s blog that everyone routinely did it... a couple of times I arrived at an access point to find a car there and no idea which way they had headed... In that case I assumed upstream from the car and walked down a way and fished back up...

Unfortunately Matt it is not that common. Fish & Game gave out some signs a couple of years ago and I have one from Hurleys in Lumsden as well as my own. I did get stirred up by a guide from Hurleys (at the same access that I took that photo) for not putting mine up a couple of seasons ago. I normally do put one up but had forgotten that day. I used to leave the sign on the dash all the time but with my current car it falls off so it isn't there to remind me to check it is showing the correct method. On the upper Mataura the F&G access signs now tell you to fish up so there you probably don't need a sign. Of course on the upper Oreti with the beat system you fish in the direction of the beat that is identified by the sign you have parked next to. Except last time I was there another (local) angler had chosen not to park by the beat sign but drive down and park by the river. He could have been on one of three beats. I went to another access where I knew there was no body else.

I used to display a fishing upstream or downstream sign in my car, but for the last couple of years iv had one of those kitchen whiteboards. That way I write on it, if we are fishing upstream or downstream, as well as number of anglers, time we left, how far we are intending on fishing etc... That way any other anglers can make an informed decision on what there next move is.

I highly recommend this method to all, but usually I'm lucky to find a fishing upstream or downstream sign.
