It's a work day of course today for me, so won't be heading out... didn't do a lot of fishing last year, so feeling the 'need' a little more this year to go visit some of those little favourite places - have a great opening everyone - when ever you do get out!!

Yea good luck to those getting out. I spent the weekend chasing searunners so have taken the call to be at my desk for opening this year round. What with the forecast weather coming in, I though staying inside and warm was a smarter idea. That being said, waking this morning its not looking too bad out there.....from my desk :(

Had a good day out in western Southland. It was quite cold and there was fresh snow low down on the Takitiku Mountains. We had a couple of showers but there was also some sunshine. Two of us managed to land 18 fish for the day ( 9 each) with the biggest being 5 3/4 lb brown. Biggest I managed was 5lb (times 2). My very first fish took a dry and I landed another on a dry at the end of the day. We had a good mayfly rise but I only saw 1 fish rise to a mayfly. It also rose to my dry but I missed it on the strike. Browns were in really good conditions.

My "opening" was an hour today between 1 and 2pm. Won't bore you with the bad weather (snow on ground Tuesday and Saturday with strong southwesterlies between) and the "had to do" jobs at home and work - but finally today had a nice day - still had to feed lambs/calves/horses etc (wife away) but after that took lunch to a local dam - and even better there was at least 10 browns cruising the edges rising to midges. First fish happily took my CDC midge but on it's initial run I stepped on the flyline lying on the ground and lost 2 flies! Second one was just as obliging and after 6 jumps landed a silvery 3lb in great condition. More snow forecast for the next week - but at some stage it'll warm up.

Yea I managed to get out for about 2 hrs yesterday as well. Unfortunately with such little time I fished a close to home river. Only spotted 4 fish. I manged to get a take on an egg fly but stuff up the set and that was all she wrote. Not to worry, plenty of season ahead of me. As you said, some bad weather coming in this week, so looks like next weekend might be out. Oh well.

Hasn't anyone else been out? Maniototoflyfisher and Fraser, you guys need to get your priorities sorted out.
I was out with a club group over the weekend but overnight rain on Friday made most rivers unfishable on Saturday and we all finished up fishing a lake. I wasn't feeling well so after landing a small brown spent most of the afternoon sleeping in the car (and out of the hail). Only one other fish was caught by the group. My self & my fishing buddy decided to fish the Upper Oreti yesterday and arrived at the top of the river to find all beats already occupied before 8:00. The beat we were going to fish was occupied by a guide and his clients. I am not sure a guide should be on this river on the first weekend of the season. We went elsewhere and had a good day landing a good number of fish. The other part of the group did get the beat they wanted on the Oreti and landed 5 fish between them.

Unfortunately work priorities and a new (to us. Its a 2010) campervan that needs a some TLC to get it ready to go for the summer season means iv not had much opportunity and when I have the spring rains have made a mess of things. Have no fear il be fishing hard this summer!

Been all of my life trying to get my priorities right!!! - but I'm getting closer! As I free more time to fish on week days I've found I can't be inspired to go fishing on "bad weather" days. Once the spring rush of calving and lambing is over and the trout are feeding on the top I'll be out there regularly.

QUITE RIGHT DAVE ON BOTH COUNTS . DAYS OF FOLLOWING MY DAD AS A KID IN POURING RAIN AND HEAD HIGH WET TUSSOCK CURED ME OF BAD WEATHER FISHING . DRY FLY ON THE TOP IS THE STORY :) DAYS OF DREDGING IN CENTRAL OTAGO ARE LONG GONE :P .
MY FAVOURITE PUDDLE IS MUD AND SNOW BOUND (and rumour has it "stuck" anglers ) ... THIS OLD GUY IS EITHER BY THE FIRE OR GARDENING !

What about the 2 "P" ponds close to you - only a few metres off the tarseal! Could get there on a mobility scooter!
