If Fish and Game see a threat, why have they not called to action their 110,000 stakeholders?

I have a family license with 2 differing email addresses attached. Not one email from them - everything must be kapai?

I agree Andy. I received an email as the president of the local fishing club asking that the club make a submission, but not an email to all licence holders? Iv forwarded it to all the club member's, but that would be a fraction of licence holders in the area.

Email I received pasted below.
----------------------------------------------

Dear Angling Club,

Fish & Game is writing to draw your attention to the most serious threat ever faced by trout, salmon and trout anglers.

The threat is contained in new legislation just introduced to Parliament.

The Indigenous Freshwater Fish Amendment Bill aims to provide better protection for indigenous fish such as galaxids, whitebait, eels, bullies, torrent fish, mudfish and other species.

While there is no argument with this protection, those who drafted the Bill have taken the opportunity to slip in anti-trout sections which if allowed to become law, pose a serious threat to trout and angling.

Some of the key threats the Bill contains are;

· It allows the removal of trout and salmon from particular rivers and lakes, even if they are significant trout and salmon fisheries.

· It doesn’t require DOC to consult with Fish & Game as the statutory managers of trout and salmon.

· It also allows trout to be part of Treaty of Waitangi settlements with iwi.

· The possibility of the sale of trout is also opened up under the Bill.

It is vital anglers make their feelings known about the proposals to stop them becoming law.

The Bill is now being considered by a select committee which is asking for public submissions.

As an angling club, you need to make a submission to the select committee and visit your local MP to make your feelings known.

Write to political party leaders and express your concern.

Encourage your members to also make individual submissions and write letters to their MPs.

Fish & Game has set up a section on its website on the threat the Bill poses.

You can find it here;

https://fishandgame.org.nz/threat-to-trout/

It contains advice on how to contact your MP, email addresses for the Prime Minister and political party leaders, an explanation of how the Bill threatens trout and anglers and a legal opinion from Sir Geoffrey Palmer on the scale of those threats.

It also provides a draft letter for people to download and send to their MP and links and advice on how to make a submission to the Parliamentary Select Committee now considering the Bill.

Fish & Game is working for you and will be making its own submission.

But what is also needed is a show of numbers from anglers to demonstrate the depth of feeling and concern that exists over this attack on trout.

If you need any further information, help or advice, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Well spoken both Johnno and Fraser.

1 million Kiwis hunt and fish, and I guess several thousand from overseas as well - perhaps we should gather in Wellington and protest this stupidity.

Iv spoken to F&G communication manager in regards to why all licence holders haven't been emailed. It sounds as though its a staged approach and all know licence holders emails will be sent a similar email next week. Maybe a less than ideal time at the start of the season, but maybe a good time as some fishers who only start to fish as the season opens might be spurned into responding.

He did say that unfortunately not everyone that purchase a licence provides an email address, which is a real pity as it makes it very hard to contact all licence holders unless an old school mail out is done. If you know people that maybe haven't provided an email address, suggest to them that they sign up to the Fish and Game magazine, then they have your email address.

Just putting it out there - F and G NZ runs a successful "dirty dairying" campaign which p.o's a certain large dairying giant along with raising public awareness of water quality issues. A new government comes in and wants to remove F and G NZ from managing freshwater fisheries and give control to a government department ….. umh??

And remember there were a lot of anglers and associated persons dissatisfied with the previous Govt’s record on water use and quality etc. so many of them voted for the new lot.

This is the thanks they get.

Bit of a betrayal.

Right there .....

I've emailed 18 MP's so far - not even the courtesy of a personal response from any of them. Just a fob off email from press secretary

Great responses from the PM and most Green Party MPs - "as this falls into the realm of the Environment Minister your letter has been forwarded for her response" or words to that effect.

Got the same response for all my emails.

The Minister for Conservation must be inundated with hundreds of thousands of emails by now :D :D :D
