If you talking about the Jungle Cock , I agree. It's great stuff and adds a lot to a streamer. Im convinced they create a trigger. They were used a lot once but now are quite rare. They are bred for tying but I don't think they'd be easy to source let alone get into NZ, if not impossible due to various treaties surrounding the trade in endangered birds and animals. I'm lucky enough to have several old capes and they are reserved for only a few flies for a few select clients now and again

I know this thread is a couple of years old now but I wanted to add that I fished the Tongariro in the late 50's and it was all downstream lures then with mainly wooden one or two piece long rods and large lures. The shops along the shore between Taupo and Turangi stocked some turkey flies but I think by then they were starting to be phased out by more modern ones. In about 1964 downstreaming was still king but I believe not long after that nymphing started to take on.

Yea swings and runabouts hey? Back in the day it was all downstream wets, then upstream nymphing came along and now with the advent of skagit and skandi style double handed fishing has made its way to NZ shores its all swapping back to downstream again. Who knows whats next hey?
Bucking trends in fly fishing since 1970!

Spey casting like they do on the Salmon rivers in Scotland. The only thing that changes is the upgrading of tackle. You could go out fishing today with a Turkey and Red lure and still catch trout. Going back even further to Roman times you could wind a piece of red wool around a hook and catch trout.
With a Czech rig today you can fish across and downstream and even hang a lure off the end if you want to so the gear and methods today are very flexible.
