Blending possum fur for dubbing

Hi Team,

Can anyone help me with blending a stash of fur I have for dubbing please? I don't have an old coffee grinder, nor food processor on hand and I am trying to help a family member start to tie his own flies. Old coffee grinders are not as common as they once were in second hand emporiums. I had a look at the one in Mayfield just before lockdown, and she had not seen one for a while she said...

Quite happy to sort some beersies if you can assist and post the fur to you, with a courier bag to return it.

Thanks in advance,

Andy W

Hi Andy - the other "old time" method is to cut the different furs in to short lengths and put into a jar, half fill with warm water and couple drops sunlight liquid - screw on the lid then shake around. Tip out into a sieve and dry - if not blended enough repeat.

PM me Andy. I can do it for you.... I have a shit load of possum, and a wide variety of other furs so you’d probably get back more than you send.....

Alternatively there are a few grinders that pop up on TM...

Any guys reading this and thinking they'll give it a go, remember not to let that blender cut up the fur for too long.
It really does chop it up pretty fine and you're left with dust.

Trust me - I know from past mistakes.

More than happy to help @ Andy W but it looks like you're sorted out.

@Maniototoflyfisher - that's a great idea - never heard of that one before.
Definitely get around not chopping stuff up too fine.

Only need three short 1 - 2 sec pulses at most. Shouldn’t cut up the fur. Plus if you put in synthetics, longer pulses can melt some of those fine synthetic fibres and create a bit of a mess..

Johnno - have pm'ed you, and Jaapie thanks for putting your hand up as well.

The nephew is getting a new vice too, as I gladdened Steve's day with the purchase of a Peak 2 days ago. Can't wait for the courier to come up the driveway :-)

Cheers,

Hi Andy. Did you get it with the c clamp or the flat base. When I bought mine I couldn't see any use for the flat base so got the c clamp. Not long after I made my own flat base using a piece of 5mm steel 150mm x 150mm. Haven't used the clamp since.
