Hi - building one of the Epic 580 build your own kits (first time) and everything is pretty straightforward out of the box, but I just had a question about the silk wraps. I've finished all the wraps and want to put the first layer of epoxy on, but the rod dryer turner I ordered online hasn't showed up yet. My options are 1. do the first coat and hand turn it and do the finishing coat with the turner, or 2. wait until the rod turner shows up. My question is: do the silk wraps loosen over time if I wait a while until putting the epoxy on? It has been a couple of days since wrapping.
Cheers
Andrew

Re: Rookie question about wraps
Andrew,
Wait, seriously you will get a much nicer finish with the turner, the wraps should be fine as long as you did them nice and snug and aren't playing with the rod every 5mins. I know how tempting it is to have a quick flick!
If you really want to carry on, find an old microwave and rip out the motor, wire it up and away you go. I have 2 that I use, one is 4.6 rpm and the other 5. Works a treat. IMHO.
Once the epoxy is on it's not coming off with out destroying your wraps.

Dowww... I just ripped an old microwave apart to pull the magnets out for making a spey rod carrier for the car in winter. Didn't even think about pulling out the turntable motor? Would have been perfect?

Re: Rookie question about wraps
an alternative to a microwave motor is the motor used to turn the rotisserie for a BBQ. They can be picked up quite easily from BBQ depts of hardware chain stores and they are driven by small battery which makes them very portable.

Re: Rookie question about wraps
Thanks for the response Ian. I might take a look at that because the rod turner I bought online still hasn't showed up! Since I'm going away for Christmas (and had hoped to blood the new rod!) I really need it to show up in the next day or I'll be stuffed. When I did the wraps I assumed the turner would be a day or two away but unfortunately that hasn't eventuated...
