Reel Seat for JD's build

Post by OneHairyArm » Thu Oct 09, 2014 7:59 pm

Took time away from the glue and plane, and spent time on the lathe, to turn up a real seat for JD's build.
This isn't it ( just a test piece) but turned from the same block. It's Ambrosia Maple with Nickel Silver hardware. JD's build is medium flamed, What you guys reckon ( especially you JD) good match or try again?

What a superb looking grain in the wood Matt. It certainly looks very nice with the nickel silver hardware!!

I have spent the past few days traveling to a location outside of Amman Jordan....just getting settled in and opened the computer to catch up....and see this!!!

Wow Matt, I love it!! gorgeous!! Are you sure that's just the test piece? I love the the look of that color/grain....stunning!! If this is any indication... I am really looking forward to see the rest of the build!!

Thanks for posting!

I am going to try and get a few little bits of Tasmanian wood over for you to check out Matt.. Huon Pine is seriously sexy stuff and could lend itself to a reel seat or two...

Cool Johnno,

Here's another seat, this one is Olive wood and hasn't had the finish (tru-oil) yet but it's such a hard wood. I broke one blank and broke a drill bit trying to bore it.
My skin feels so oily, and the shop smells of oilves but I actually love this seat.

Hi Matt

That's a magnificent piece of work and I would love either of them on any of my rods. Many years ago I had Allan Carr rework an old Mannlicher Schoenauer I still have. When he sent it back to me I fell in love with it all over again. I treated it with "kid gloves" and was mortified when on return from a hunting trip I found a scratch on the stock.....I still piss blood when I see it.

regards
Ross
